Ditch TV for Kids Indoor Activities

There are times when television is good for kids, such as educational children’s shows. But in many cases the TV is misused and becomes a babysitter for parents. Kids should spend very little time watching television and they should be more involved in kids’ indoor activities that will keep them healthy.

Half of the children in America watch two or more hours of television each day. The more a child watches, the more likely they will have attention problems when they get a little older. The journal Pediatrics made the claim in their April 2004 issues that each hour of TV viewed a day increases attention problem chances by 10 percent by the time they reach seven years old.

Your child will have fewer attention problems as they grow older if they don’t watch much TV. This will help them at home and at school. Kids could use this time better by doing some fun activities. They don’t even have to leave the house to stay healthy and active.

Parents can get many ideas from books or online. Here are a few ideas to get you started: dancing, a relay race, hide and seek, throwing a soft ball, a scavenger hunt and indoor bowling. It doesn’t take a lot of work to come up with a long list of ideas for your kids.

What makes these activities so effective for kids is that they’re a lot of fun. Kids don’t even realize they’re doing something good for their body. And when parents play along, kids are even more motivated. For young kids, activities like this can help them grow and develop properly. Of course, exercising also helps kids stay healthy and avoid childhood obesity.

Evaluate your child’s schedule and determine whether or not they spend too much time in front of the TV. If they do, make a change. Believe it or not, most kids would actually prefer to do a fun activity instead of watching another show.

Make sure your child enjoys his own life instead of watching the lives of someone else. It may require more work for the parent, but in the end it’s well worth it. Kids’ indoor activities should be important to every family in America.
